April's Last Hodgepodge

Agapanthus flowers in our front yard

The Hodgepodge questions for this week are below. If you want to link up and/or answer the questions on your blog, click here.

1.   Are you feeling more reset, restart, or full speed ahead as we move into May? Tell us why.

I'm not sure I can differentiate between "reset" and "restart." Just climbing aboard the blogging habit after a break is where I am.  Perhaps my "reset" is the tweaks I made in my blog design; and my "restart" is deliberately putting one foot in front of the other in the dailyness of life.

2. Painting, sculpture, architecture, literature, cinema, theatre, music...what's your favorite form of art? Elaborate.

Oh, without a doubt, my favorite form of art is music, especially inspirational. On a fun (musical) note, often my husband sings to me! He is a fan of Elvis, but "our song" is by Rod Stewart.

Have I Told You Lately

Then there is this: every time I begin a conversation with him about yesterday, Gary breaks into song with his version of Paul McCartney's "Yesterday." 😆

3.  What time is dinner at your house? How do you feel about leftovers?

“Dinner” is lunch at our house, our biggest meal of the day. We don’t usually have leftovers because our meals are often prepared for just two servings. But with that said, when we do have leftovers in the fridge, it’s nice to have something that’s already been prepared to eat for a light supper (around 5pm).

Last week's lunchtime Pepperoni Rolls at Piesanos
gave me some wonderful leftovers
for that night's supper!

4. What's the last thing you fell down a rabbit hole investigating?

I have questions!! With the research tools available to us now (Internet, Artificial Intelligence, and ChatGPT), it's super-easy to spend a lot of time investigating those things that baffle us. In my childhood years,  I enjoyed reading about many things in my family’s set of Encyclopedia Brittanica and The Book of Knowledge. Research today is so much easier, and faster!

Discernment as to what is truth and what is a ploy to outwit us out of our money is really important, so we need to be careful.

A list of my recent (and most frequent) "rabbit holes," includes the following:

commentaries on scripture

product reviews

psychology

5. And now for a question from the book Marilyn (Memphis Bridges) gave me...

At what are you 'self-taught?'

Blogging. I read some informative books and websites, but in large part I had to figure out the quirks of blogging platforms on my own. That all began in 2009. I have had many blogs over the years for different interests, but now it's just this one, Journal Memories.

6. Insert your own random thought here.

hand brakes on my bicycle

Know Your Options

Recently while on our morning bicycle ride, figuratively speaking, my mental tires weren't fully inflated. I nearly "met my Maker" as an approaching car and I almost collided. The driver had the right of way, and I did my best to yield to her, but my brakes were not working!

Blessedly, the driver slowed down to a stop while I helplessly careened right in front of her. All the while Gary was behind me shouting "use your brakes!!"

Finally stopped on the other side of the road, thanking God for protecting me through that near miss, I learned something I had been told before but clearly had forgot, information I had not been using.

I've got TWO hand brakes on my bicycle but I've been using only the ones on the right handle, never the other ones on the left. Each one serves a specific purpose and the one on the right had been sufficient -- until this one time.

When we got home, Gary saw the problem with my brake and fixed it. He also explained (again) when I should use the brake on the right and when the one on the left is necessary.

Clearly, I was not aware or paying attention to my options. I learned that in the case of bicycle brakes, this option is not just a matter of preference but more an issue of which is necessary for specific situations.

You can be sure I am wiser for the experience! Now I am more inclined to look around other aspects of life, asking myself if I'm overlooking any other options that need my consideration.

"..... a [person] of understanding

and knowledge maintains order."

Proverbs 28:2b NIV

Until next time, grace and peace.

Oh boy, thankful that braking incident was a learning experience instead of a deadly experience. I enjoyed your very thoughtful answers to the questions. I'm a little out of kilter right now and behind on bloggy visits. Hope the end of April and very beginning of May are lovely in your corner!

I love the flower!
I'm so glad you're ok, very scary and I know it was for both you and Gary.
I thought your comments on research were interesting. It certainly is much easier to investigate than it was when we were younger.

I struggled to find the difference between reset and restart too.
Aww! That is so sweet what you said for question #2. Have I Told You Lately is such a beautiful song.
Oh gosh! That sounds scary with the near miss on your bicycle ride. I am glad you are OK and Gary could fix the problem.

Dear Barbara, I eat my dinner at 5 p.m. as well! I generally don't eat lunch, so I will have a good breakfast in the morning, in the afternoon I have yogurt, a very light lunch with just yogurt, and I have my supper between 5 and 5:30 p.m.
I love Rod Stewart and that song is a beautiful one! Great singer and entertainer!
I am glad you are alright and that Gary was able to fix the problem.

The bike incident could have been really bad...thankful that the driver was paying attention and avoided a collision. Also, glad that your bike is now fixed... Great answers to some somewhat harder questions this time. I had to put on my thinking cap. Music is a great answer...it just has a way of toughing the soul...

Oh dear Barbara! That biking incident would probably be enough to keep me "out of the saddle" of a little while! I never have been very good at bike riding anyway, and since I've had major back surgery and neck surgery I really am leery of even trying. I am proud of you for conquering your anxieties about it and enjoying riding with your hubby...and I pray this little incident won't keep you from continuing. It was one of those learning experiences that thankfully didn't end up badly! Oh, yes, music is my chosen creative outlet...singing in the church choir in particular. I'm thankful to still have a voice to sing, although it's definitely not as strong as it used to be. Oh, and yes, the computer has certainly helped us figure out many things that go down the rabbit hole! I love having an encyclopedia of sorts at my fingertips anytime I need it. It sure beats having to lug a set of Worldbook or Brittanica around with us. LOL. I'm so glad you are continuing to blog. I would miss our "visits" if you weren't here.

I'm glad your biking incident ended without injury. We have a very good friend here who was in a devastating accident last September. I hope you can continue to enjoy riding with your hubs. I love that photo at the top of your blog. Hope all is well!

That was such a close call, Barbara! I'm so glad that Gary figured out what the issue was with your brakes and was able to fix it for you. He's a keeper! On the days that we're home, which is most of them, Danny (my personal chef-LOL!) starts prepping around 5:30 and we have dinner around 6:15 and 6:30. It certainly works for us! Stay safe and well!

Praise the Lord you are well following your cycling experience. Thank you Lord.

A great post today, thank you. Great choice of music too. God bless always.

I am relieved that the Lord's protection was covering you during your biking incident. Also relieved that the lady driver was paying attention. We typically eat dinner between 4:15 and 4:30. We love leftovers in our house.

Thank goodness for that angel watching over you.
I love your answer to #1. You distinguished well between restart and reset. My daughter tells us we eat earlier and earlier. I think eating about 2:00 is my favorite. I am usually set for the day and feel better and sleep better too. I pray for discernment probably more than I ever thought I would with the changes coming. I do know change is inevitable and I don't usually get too worked up, but I do feel some of the changes with AI are a little different than changes of the past. I have decided rabbit holes aren't all that good for me. It is hard to trust information out there today. Kinda wish I just could go to the old World Book Encyclopedia and be done!
Take care!

You definitely had an angel on your shoulder, Barbara, and I'm so happy you are safe. Having lost two good friends to biking accidents in two months, it has me more concerned for my husband when he bikes than ever. I don't know the difference either between reset and restart :) But, I'm definitely starting May with hope in my heart and prayers for a better month than we had in April. Take care now on that bike and enjoy your weekend!

I haven't been on a bike in such a long time, I'm wondering if I used the brakes properly when I rode. I enjoyed the encylopedia set my family had when I was young. And I believe I bought the same Book of Knowledge set you show above for our family at a garage sale, or maybe an estate sale. Once we were connected to the internet, it took me a while to let go of the encyclopedia set even though I knew they were finally never likely to be used again.

I am so very thankful that your biking situation ended well, and that the driver was paying attention. I enjoyed your sharing the hodgepodge. We enjoy leftovers here, thankfully my husband enjoys them. I like to cook once, eat twice, lol! Happy May blessings to you!

I went through a very painful breakup with my boyfriend. We stopped talking, and he even blocked me on all social media. I was heartbroken and didn’t know what to do, so I started searching online for help. That’s when I came across several testimonies about Dr. Dawn and how he had helped people reunite broken relationships and marriages, as well as helped women conceive through his guidance.
At first, I was unsure, but I decided to reach out to him. When we spoke, he told me things about myself and my relationship that were surprisingly accurate. He then guided me on what I should do.
To my surprise, within 48 hours, my boyfriend—who had completely cut me off—started calling me and sending me many messages, apologizing and asking for forgiveness. I forgave him, and we got back together.
Not only that, but with his support and guidance, we are now blessed with two beautiful children.
I am truly grateful for everything, and I strongly recommend Dr. Dawn to anyone going through relationship, marriage, or fertility challenges.
