Here are Joyce's Hodgepodge questions for this week. My responses are in green. If you want to participate on your blog, click here.
1. Do you struggle with the commercialization of the holiday season? .Yes. What helps you keep your focus when the season's busyness and commercialism start to take over? .The sacred music of Christmas calms me. The lyrics of the Biblical Christmas story as well as instrumental performances -- settle me.
2. What's one small thing you want to savor before the year ends? For many years my family had a tradition of beef brisket that I marinated for hours on Dec. 23rd and then cooked in a slow oven all day on Christmas Eve.
We often would do some sight-seeing as a family all day on December 24th in addition to the Christmas Eve church service. Coming home to the scent of the BBQ was something we all enjoyed so much. That was the main dish for our Christmas Eve dinner, usually accompanied with corn on the cob, a green salad, and dinner rolls.
We drank Sparkling Cider in Christmas stemware and then had a good dessert, which was often Red Velvet cake.
A lot has changed since those days. Now it's too much effort for just the two of us when we can buy equally wonderful BBQ to bring home.
So, to answer the question, I'd like to savor some BBQ brisket (or pulled pork) before year's end -- maybe on New Year's Eve?
3. December 9th is National Christmas Card Day. Do you still send Christmas cards?
Yes, but I also do a lot of my cards via email and Facebook. I have morphed from the annual printed newsletter to a special blog post devoted for that purpose (yet to be written, by the way). If so, does yours include a photo or is it a more traditional card, or maybe homemade? I do a mix of traditional (store-bought) cards and photo cards. How do you feel about the tradition of exchanging cards at the holidays? I like it and enjoy receiving the cards, but postage rates have steadily increased in recent years, so mailing cards is getting to be awful pricey. I've noticed we don't receive as many as we used to.
4. What's your least favorite holiday related task? Taking down the decorations. What's your favorite?Turning on the tree lights.
5. Let's do a little holiday this or that?
~ shopping or wrapping
~ baking or decorating
~ eggnog or wassail
~ real tree or artificial
~ turkey or ham turkey for Thanksgiving and Ham for Christmas Day (or leftover BBQ, see #2 above)
~ white lights or colored lights -- both!
~ ugly sweaters or matching pjs. We don't really get into either of these traditions.
~ peppermint or cinnamon, both!
~ presents Christmas Eve or presents Christmas Day.
6. Insert your own random thought here. I have been a fan of Mary Engelbreit's art, her sense of humor, home decorating style, and greeting cards since about 1985. Here are some of my favorites of her Christmas artistry:

That looks like a great place to visit. We enjoy touring places like that.
We send out cards, but also do them at church where we have mail slots and can avoid postage so that helps.
We also do Turkey on Thanksgiving and Ham on Christmas - but this year we're changing things up and having Lasagna!
I do love everything about Christmas, but I am feeling a bit behind this year. This may the year of no cards:)
I think I have had just a bit too much as of late, but I am still loving on the things like lots of Christmas hymns. I made me a playlist a few years back and it is on repeat often.
No traveling for us this year, and perhaps, not ever, Barbara, but we are in a huge state of thankfulness that our family will be visiting us over Christmas. That's the one gift we treasure the most! I do love sending and receiving Christmas cards and will probably keep that tradition up until I can't. Wishing Gary and you the merriest of Christmases!
I enjoyed your Hodgepodge answers! What a cute photo of Gary and you! Yes and amen to good Christmas music and Christmas lights to enjoy and lean into. I like that brisket tradition you had in the past! Yikes with the price of prime rib this year I'm wondering about an alternative. Looking forward to your tour photos!
Hi Barbara - It's my husband who does the Christmas\Hanukkah cards to friends who who live far away. With the price of cards and postage and can be too much for some. Sometimes I miss it but by him taking that chore over, it does take a lot off my plate. My husband said it was close to $70 in postage. That's crazy. In these times, that's a nice lunch out! 🤔
I always enjoy viewing historical homes all decorated up for Christmas. That mansion is awesome. Yep, that would be a nice one to tour anytime in the year!
Your brisket sounds mouthwatering. Last year I did a prime rib and this year, it's a rolled beef roast.
I always enjoy your post and your writing style! ✍️
Oh, that Stetson Mansion looks like a wonderful place to visit. I love touring old mansions! Always fun to read your hodgepodge answers, Barbara. I love the traditional Christmas hymns as well. One of my fondest memories is attending church on Christmas Eve and hearing O, Holy Night being sung as a solo by a beautiful tenor voice. I looked forward to that every year. Love your brisket tradition--I've only ever cooked one in my whole life, but I still remember how tasty it was. I love sending cards, but with the cost of postage I'm definitely cutting back! Have a wonderful weekend--and send some of that Florida warmth up north :)
I enjoyed your teaser about Stetson Mansion, Barbara. Your brisket from the past sounds delicious and what a wonderful memory you shared. I love sending cards throughout the year and sending Christmas cards brings me much pleasure. Have a blessed Sunday!
Nice tour! Love the picture of you and your sweetheart! xo
